The Definitive Car Cover Buying Guide

Best Overall: CarsCover Custom Fit Ultrashield

Factory features of Ultrashield Car Cover

The CarsCover Ultrashield is a car cover we like a lot.

Five separate layers of fabric make this one of the stronger car covers around.  Two things stand out about the fabric.

First, Carscover uses the well known Remafin as a UV stabilizer.  Stabilizers reflect sun, keeping your car cooler, and help prevent deterioration of the car cover itself. The Ultrashield is not machine washable because it will destroy the UV coating.

Secondly, ultrasonic welding makes the seams tighter and more moisture resistant.  The weakest point of any manufactured product is usually the seams, so any reinforcement is a huge bonus.

The marketing materials use the term “waterproof.”  This, and no other cover short of a rubber tarp, is truly waterproof.  Nor do you want a truly waterproof car cover.

Any condensation that forms underneath a cover must be allowed to evaporate otherwise you will get rust and corrosion.  This is referred to as “breathing.”  The Ultrashield breathes very well and condensation should not be a major problem.

One of the most overlooked aspects of purchasing a car cover is how soft the inner lining is.  If you think about it, the inner lining is touching your car’s delicate clear coat at all times.

In windy conditions, the inner lining moves back and forth across paint in a sanding motion.  If the cover is even slightly abrasive it will leave fine scratches that can be seen in sunlight.  This is not a problem with the Ultrashield.  Customers give it excellent marks.

Included in any purchase are:

  • Car cover
  • Strap and buckle system (to ensure a tight fit in windy conditions)
  • Storage bag.

In sum, this is an outstanding ALL AROUND car cover with excellent ratings in across types of protection.

Carscover Ultrashield Individual Protection Ratings

What I like:

  • Tight and snug fit for Accord sedans
  • Built in mirror pockets
  • Very good all round protection profile (sun, rain, snow, etc.)
  • Excellent value for the price and quality of construction
  • Solid company with a long history of good reviews
  • Excellent support model if issues arise
  • Limited lifetime time warranty on manufacturer defects (not normal wear and tear).

What I don’t like:

  • The marketing materials use the term waterproof.  The Ultrashield, like all top car covers, is “moisture resistant”
  • Not machine washable
  • Front and back not clearly marked, so the first time installation may be a bit confusing.

This may be the best car cover for you, if you:

  • Have a car with paint in good condition that you must park outdoors
  • Live in a challenging climate (e.g., Phoenix for sun, New Orleans for rain, Los Angeles for smog)
  • Park near construction sites or on the street
  • Want to give your car the best protection possible for under $200
  • Need to protect the resale value of your car.

The Ultrashield is definitely worthy of our Best Overall rating.

Best Value: Xtrashield Custom Fit Black

The Xtrashield black is an excellent light to medium duty car cover with a price that is hard to beat.

The Xtrashield car cover is mainly designed to protect cars from dust, UV rays and bird droppings.  While it will help protect against moderate rain and snow, it only has two layers.  Those of us in rainy and snowy climates should look to heavier covers with more layers.

The fabric has the same UV stabilizer as the more expensive Ultrashield.  It also offers outstanding breathability.  Condensation, which can be an issue even inside a garage, will not lead to rust or corrosion with the Xtrashield.

Customers regularly praise how well this cover fits.  With included mirror pockets and a strap and buckle system, it is easy to secure the cover tightly so that it will not blow off even in windy weather.  A storage bag is also included.

Overall, we would rate the Xtrashield’s overall performance as follows:

Car Cover Rating Page Xtrashield

What I like:

  • Excellent value for the money (<$70)
  • Outstanding UV and dust protection
  • Lighter cover that is easy for one person to install (should take only 1-2 minutes after a little practice)
  • Excellent after sale support
  • The black cover stands out from the average grey or taupe car cover.

What I don’t like:

  • Not machine washable
  • Not well suited for long-term protection outdoors in more rainy / snowy climates.

This may be the best car cover for you, if you:

  • Live in sunny, dusty regions
  • Need a top quality cover for less than $100
  • Park outdoors for short stints at a time and value ease of install
  • Want a color that stands out from the norm.

The Xtrashield is a great value for the money and gets excellent feedback.

KAKIT Custom Fit 3 Layer Car Cover

The KAKIT Custom Fit 3 layer car cover is the only one in our roundup for less than $50.

Kakit 3 Layer Honda Accord car cover

While not in the same class as the Ultrashield, the KAKIT is one of the few budget car covers that customers actually like.

Made out of three layers of material, including a non-woven outer material and cotton inner lining, the KAKIT exhibits craftsmanship well above what its price tag would indicate.  Double stitched seams are another luxurious touch.

The KAKIT 3 layer is excellent for protecting against UV radiation, dust, bird droppings and falling leaves.  It is not the best car cover for heavy rain or snow.  Its big brother (the 6 layer, reviewed below) would be the choice there.

Built-in mirror pockets and a buckle and strap system help ensure a snug fit.  The KAKIT should stay firmly on your car in all but the most windy conditions.

Included in any purchase are:

  • Custom fit car cover
  • Storage bag
  • 2 x antenna patches
  • Windproof buckle.

What I like:

  • Best price you’re likely to find for a custom fit car cover
  • Across all makes and models (not just the Accord), KAKIT receives a lot of “exceeds expectations” feedback
  • Excellent “all arounder”…good at everything except heavy rain and snow
  • 3o day money back guarantee is a nice feature on a budget cover
  • As primarily an Amazon company, KAKIT’s customer service is both excellent and fast.

What I don’t like:

  • A bit heavy for a three layer cover and somewhat hard to get back into the storage bag
  • Not suitable for parking long-term outdoors in wet climates.

This may be the best car cover for you, if you:

  • Are on a tight budget
  • Are a first time user of car covers (has a money back guarantee)
  • Live in moderate to dry climates.

With premium features and a 3 year warranty, the KAKIT offers a lot at a very affordable price.

KAKIT Custom Fit 6 Layer Car Cover

The KAKIT 6 layers is basically the same car cover but with three additional layers:

  • 3 x non-woven layers
  • 1 x moisture resistant layer
  • 1 x UV coating layer
  • Cotton inner lining.

We will not rehash the same points over as most of the other features are identical.  However, the 6 layer does offer much more protection against rain and snow.  The only downsides to that additional protection are a little price premium and some added bulk.

Conclusion – Honda Accord Car Cover

We hope you have found our Honda Accord car cover review thoughts and supporting materials helpful.

We strongly recommend the Ultrashield for all climates.  It is definitely worthy of being our “Best Overall.”

If you live in a drier climate, the Xtrashield is our Best Value and will do just as well for about half the price.  The two KAKITs are budget covers, but good ones.

The Accord is a great car that is absolutely worthy of protecting.  If you are fortunate enough to own one, do both you and your car a favor and strongly consider getting a car cover.

FAQs

What are the risks that car covers help protect my car from?

Well, the short answer is rain, snow, wind, dust, sun, bird droppings, tree sap, minerals from sprinkler systems, construction dust and about a thousand other things.

Here is a good overview of all the ways to damage car paint.

Will these car covers protect against hail storms?

No, you cannot count on any protection.  The thicker ones would provide protection against pea sized hail, but that’s about it.  Also, it is almost impossible to predict the intensity of hail storms or size of hailstones in advance.  We have written extensively on this topic.  If hail is a real threat where you live, check out our thoughts on hail protection systems.

What about universal versus custom fit car covers?

Universal car covers can be 50% – 80% cheaper than custom fit car covers.  This is usually due to lower quality fabrics and workmanship (e.g., stitching at the seams).  If your budget allows, we always recommend custom fit car covers.  They fit much more snugly, which means your paint is less likely to get scratched in inclement weather.

Are these car covers truly waterproof?

No, no and still no.  We touched on this above, but it bears repeating.  Car covers are “moisture resistant” not “waterproof.”  If it rains hard enough for long enough, some moisture will penetrate even the heaviest car covers.  The best 4-7 layer car covers will keep your car dry from MOST storms, just not all.

The reason we harp on this point is that it is the biggest source of customer complaints.  They see “waterproof” in the product listing, and then get upset when even a little moisture gets through.  See our detailed thoughts here.

Do I need to purchase any additional accessories?

Not really.  All of our recommendations come with straps and storage bags.  Those are the biggies.  Other things to consider are a cable and lock system, micro fiber cloths and soft brushes for cleaning the exterior.

Here is my favorite all around soft brush that I use with my car:

Sale
Chemical Guys Acc_S90 The Goat Boar's Hair Detail Brush
Gentle, will not scratch surface. Can be used for both interior and exterior cleaning. Sturdy handle. Can be hung for easy storage.

Should I use the strap and buckle system if my car is parked outside?

It absolutely never hurts.  If you are parking for a short time outside on a very still day, you will not likely run into any harm. That said, it is good practice to get into the habit.

If my car cover is not machine washable, what do I do?

Simply use water and gently clean with a soft cleaning brush.   Let it air dry on a clothesline or inside-out on your car.  Even if washing by hand, laundry detergent or kitchen soap should not be used on car covers with UV coating.  The soap can diminish if not completely remove the coating.

Can I use and outdoor car cover inside my garage?

Yes.  The main thing to check for is breathability.  Even inside a garage, a car will be covered in condensation on particularly humid days.  Really thick car covers may not breathe sufficiently, especially if cars are stored for a long time without removing the covers.  If you plan to be gone for a long time and garage your car, buy an INDOOR car cover that is specifically design for that purpose.

I park on the street. Should I use a car cover?

I would.  Cars parked on the street face all the normal hazards PLUS having road debris thrown up by the tires of passing cars. Flying rocks (even pebbles) and dirt can damage paint.  In my opinion, one of the best uses of car covers is on street parked cars.

Do car covers help prevent theft?

Yes, but probably not in the way you are thinking.  A determined thief can cut through even a wire cable with a lock system.  However, most thefts are opportunity driven.  The most common occurrence is a thief seeing something valuable laying in the front seat or on the dash.  Car covers help prevent these crimes of opportunity by blocking line of sight.
